MERCATORLEZING XL: De Antarctische expeditie, in het kielzog van de Belgica. Lecture by Imke Hansen

Sint-Niklaas, BE
Organisation: STeM
On 16 August 1897, the research ship Belgica leaves Antwerp for the unexplored Antarctic. Led by young naval officer Adrien de Gerlache, the expedition charts part of the Antarctic Peninsula. As the Belgica sails further south, it gets trapped in the pack ice and will be forced to spend the winter there.
KBR released a retelling of this exciting expedition in 2022 with a story map, an online interactive story. The starring role in this narrative is given to the Admiralty nautical charts used by the crew aboard the Belgica and annotated by various expedition members. These and other maps from the ‘Fonds de Gerlache’ were donated to the Royal Library by de Gerlache's daughter in 1941. This lecture not only tells the story of the expedition and the realisation of the story map, but also discusses the circumstances of the donation and the figure of Marie-Louise de Gerlache. Antarctica, continent of extremes, will also be discussed in detail: its discovery and mapping over the centuries, shown on maps and prints from KBR's collections.
