Following Belgian independence, it soon became clear that the young country needed reliable maps. That is why the Dépôt de la Guerre et de la Topographie, the forerunner of today’s NGI, was established in 1832. Through the Military Cartographic Institute and the Military Geographical Institute, this institution developed into the NGI as we know it today.
But the NGI was not alone. Other government departments have also contributed to the mapping of Belgium over the years.
