BelgiumOrganisation: STeMSurveyor Jan Bale bequeathed us many maps from the region that is today East Flanders between 1640 and 1680.
Today, these maps are scattered among university libraries, archives and private collections, showing a diverse range of maps for different uses. However, recent historical research, by a descendant of Jan Bale, places the history of the Bale family in the context of the Counts of Flanders and the emergence of cartography in Flanders in the Middle Ages.
